I remember wearing a poncho when I was a kid.
For me, it was the fringe that made it fabulous.
And my daughters loved the ponchos that I
made for them - in their favorite colors of course.
Now, one of my granddaughters has a poncho
and the other two really want one.
Granny Square Layout
You
will need:
- Three shades of your favorite color - a dark, medium and light tone.
- Crochet Hook – size 3.5mm
Make:
- 8 Daisy Granny Squares in Dark Purple.
- 16 Daisy Granny Squares in Medium Purple
- 24 Daisy Granny Squares in Light Purple
The
next step is to add a border. I used the traditional Granny Square Stitch in
light purple.
Now
add the fringe in light purple.
Lastly,
I added two rows of single stitches to the neck opening. If you find the
opening too big, you can always add more rows.

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Shawne. If you do decide to give it a try i'd love to see it. I can't wait to see what you make.
DeleteHi T'onna. Sorry it took so long to reply. For some reason I couldn't. I would hit publish then my reply would disappear. Finally fixed it. Now I can say thanks so much for the compliment!
ReplyDeleteI didn't own a poncho until I grew up and made one for myself. Yours is very pretty. I am going to make it in one solid color to show off the beautiful stitches and omit the fringe. Thanx for your post.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see it when it's finished.
ReplyDeleteWhat size of each square ? 7 x 7 inch ?
ReplyDeletewow what a super pattern, have been looking all over for a nice poncho pattern to take me back to my childhood, my friend and I made ourselves each one out of old blankets,my how I loved that poncho!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing am dying to make this lovely item xxxxxxx
That's sooo pretty :) do you think it would fit a small adult or would more squares need to be added?
ReplyDeleteThe size of this poncho is probably a medium to large adult.
DeleteOh ok :) I thought it was a child's pattern :) so if I used a smaller hook would the size be a tiny bit smaller? Thanks for your help I'm pretty new to crocheting
DeleteOh my gosh Heenee. I see a mistake in my square layout diagram. I have the neck opening at only one square but it is actually a lot bigger.
DeleteIf you are making it for a child, use the layout as it is right now. And you won't have to put as many rows at the bottom of the poncho. You can customize the length to fit.
I'll be changing the layout pic sometime this week. Thanks for helping see my mistake.
Good luck. I would really like to see how it turns out. And let me know how the pattern reads. Thanks so much.
So how do you make the head opening bigger for an adult? Do you just leave off the entire first row of squares?
DeleteCan this be made in an adult size? Thank you it is very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis poncho actually fits an teenager/adult. It would be kinda big for a small child.
DeleteHello my name is Jennifer and my daughter saw this poncho and she asked if I can make it for her in other colors. But I do not know what the VH 4 stitch is. Can you please help.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. Thanks for pointing that typo for me. VH is supposed to be ch. There were several other typos so I fixed them too. Sorry about that.
DeleteDarlene thank you. I had looked all over the internet and could not figure out what a vh was. i am sorry that you had to go in and fix a typo, but i do thank you so much. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI remember having a poncho too. Comfortable in the fall and Spring. Great color choice.
ReplyDeleteI loved my poncho and my daughter still loves hers. I made it for her when she was a teenager and she is in her early twenties now and still wears it.
DeleteWhat yarn did you use for this?
ReplyDeleteHi I used red heart super saver yarn.
DeleteHi, first thank u very much for sharing this wonderful poncho pattern.
ReplyDeletei have 2 problems with the chrochet. First: i have my dearproblems with the short like ch, sc and all thosebecause english is not my language. I chrochet it now until round 4 and i wonder because it looks like finished and like in the picture but i dont understand that there should be 6 rounds. ?? Really idont get it. :( Please help me to explain because that granny squares are really cute and beautiful.
Hi,the last two rounds are border and stabilize the granny square so it keeps it's shape.
DeleteI am making this kind of upside down and out of lace thread. I started with the tc and then added the daisy squares to the bottom. My question is how long is this poncho?
ReplyDeleteI don't have the poncho anymore. I gave it away. But I think it falls from neck to knees so about three feet apporximately.
DeleteOk. Well I am definitely not making it that long. I am making it for a thirteen year old. I made it so that the center sits slightly longer than he belt. It has turned out beautifully. Doing it in place has taken a very long time but it is well worth it.
DeleteI'm having issue with putting this together.
ReplyDeleteI have all the squares made....like you said if I follow the diagram in the picture the head hole isn't big enough...sooooo how do I do this when I have more squares of each color. ....
Ex. ...the white squares I have 8..would I drew them together as follows:
Triangle
Square
Triangle
Square
Triangle
Square
Trange
Square
And join
GOSTEI MUITO DESSE PONCHO,O DESENHO É SUAVE E A COR MUITO BONITA QUE FICOU.
ReplyDeleteOBRIGADA POR PARTILHAR.
I love ponchos and had to read this post as soon as I saw the word poncho. Pinned and shared.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I knit, but I've never managed to figure out how to crochet decently!
ReplyDeleteI just printed out this pattern. My daughter and I are both nuts for purple anything. I love that I can work on the squares this summer when the temps are between 95 - 105 - and have it ready for this Christmas. Thanks for posting it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colour! My poncho is woolen and beige in color. I wear them very often, they are comfortable and look beautiful.
