Crochet Pattern for Rainbow Hat with Ear Flaps

Please Share the Love
I've made several hats now - mostly one color. I thought I'd make a multi-colored hat for a change. Something bright and beautiful.

I chose fucia pink, a darker pink, peacock blue, lemon yellow, purple and lime green.

Oh, and ear flaps. It has to have ear flaps.

Materials
  • 4mm Crochet Hook
  • Red Heart Yarn. I ball for each color. 6 colors for the hat in image.

Definitions
CH – Chain,
DC – Double Crochet,
HDC – Half Double Crochet,
SC – Single Crochet
SLST – Slip Stitch,
BEG – Beginning,
REP – Repeat,
2TOG HDC Decrease – 2 Stitches Together to Decrease.

Hat with Ear Flaps Pattern

This pattern works in rounds.

Round 1: Colour A – CH 4 and SL ST to the BEG CH to form a ring.

Round 2: CH 2, then HDC 9 times around the ring. (CH 2 counts as 1 HDC = 10 HDC). SL ST at the end to the top of the BEG CH 2.

Round 3: CH 2, then 1 HDC into the same joining stitch. 2 HDC into each stitch around the circle. SL ST at the end to the top of the Beg CH 2.

Round 4: CH 2, *1 HDC into the next stitch and then 2 HDC into the next. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST at the end to the top of the Beg CH 2.

Round 5: CH 2, *1 HDC into the next 2 stitches, 2 HDC into the next. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST at the end to the top of the Beg CH 2.

Round 6: CH 2, *1 HDC into the next 3 stitches, 2 HDC into the next. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST at the end to the top of the Beg CH 2.

Round 7: Colour Change B, CH 2 and 1 HDC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST at the end to the top of the BEG CH 2.

Round 8: CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 9: Colour Change C, CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 10: Colour Change D, CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 11: Colour Change E, CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 12: CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 13: Colour Change A, CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 14: CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Round 15: CH 1, SC into each stitch. SL ST at the end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear Flap
Using Colour A, fold the hat in half with the SL ST seam at the fold line.

From the back middle, count 6 stitches to find your starting point for the ear flaps. Fasten on yarn.

Round 1: CH 2, then HDC into the next 15 stitches. Turn.

Round 2:  Begin decreasing. CH 2, then 2 TOG HDC DEC, then HDC until the final two stitches. On the final 2 stitches, 2 TOG HDC DEC again.

Round 3: Alternate Rounds 1 and 2 until you have no more stitches.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

To make the second ear flap fold at the middle point. Use the first ear flap for placement of the second ear flap. Repeat steps for first flap.

Braids
  1. Cut 2 48” strands of each colour.
  2. Taking half of the strands fold into half. Using a crochet hook, insert the hook from the inside of the hat and grab the strands at the fold and pull through enough to pull the strands through the loop.
  3. Repeat step 2 on same ear flap.
  4. Separate secured strands into 3 groups. Braid together. Tie off braid with yarn.
  5. Repeat all steps for the other side.

Pom Pom
  1. Using all six colors make a pom pom.
  2. Attach to hat using yarn colour A

I need more practice making pom poms. LOL
