Butterflies - Crochet Pattern for Beginners

Hi. Glad you stopped by. I want to show you these adorable little crocheted butterflies.  They are a small part of a larger project which I will share with you in the next few weeks. But for now, here are the butterflies.

Abbreviations
ch   chain
sl    slip stitch
dtr  double treble stitch
tr    treble (triple stitch)


Butterfly Crochet Pattern

Ch 4. Sl st into first ch to form a ring.

*Ch 4. 3 dtr (double treble stitch) into ring. Ch 4. sl st into ring.* Repeat from * to * one time. This is the larger part of the wing.

*Ch 3. 3 tr (treble stitch) into ring. Ch 3. sl st into ring.* Repeat from * to * one time. This is the small part of the wing.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Crochet Butterfly Abdomen and Antennae

Join complimentary color. "Chain as many stitches required to reach the end of the butterfly." This yellow one needed six.

Slip stitch body to the wings. 

Turn over.

Repeat from * to *

Slip stitch at the top of the wings and tie off.

Trim antennae to desired length.

Ta daa. You just finished your first butterfly. Isn't it cute!

How to Crochet a Double Treble Stitch

The double treble is also called a double triple. 

The abbreviation is dtr. 

1. Yarn over hook three times, then insert hook into next stitch.
2. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch (there are now five loops on your hook).
3. Loop yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now four loops on your hook).
4. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now three loops on your hook).
5. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now two loops on your hook).
6. Again, yarn over hook and draw through the last two loops on your hook (You should now have only one loop on your hook.)

How to Crochet a Treble (Triple Stitch)

The treble abbreviation is tr.

1. Yarn over hook two times. Insert hook into next stitch.
2. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch - (four loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops, (three loops remain on the hook).
4. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops.
5. Yarn over and draw through the last two loops on the hook (there should now only be one loop on your hook.)
